Bowen
Bowen, on the mainland of Australia at the northern region of the Whitsunday Islands, is located between Cairns and Mackay and is only a 40 minute drive from Airlie Beach.
Bowen history
The oldest town in Queensland, Bowen was founded in 1861 by explorer, Captain Henry Daniel Sinclair. Most of Bowen's history, including shipwrecks, is displayed at the Bowen Historical Museum.
Bowen outdoor attractions
Mullers Lagoon is a popular place in Bowen. Filled with about 163 bird species, the lagoon is an oasis of wildlife. The lagoon is unique for accommodating dry country birds, such as budgerigars, despite it being located on the east coast.
Bowen beaches
When you're in Bowen, relax at its beaches - Front Beach, Grays Beach, Queens Beach and Kings Beach to name a few.
The beaches are great places to go snorkeling, diving, fishing and windsurfing. Bowen has a colourful array of marine life. Observe the myriad of parrot fish, blue tusk fish, as well as soft and hard corals.
Bowen parklands
Enjoy beautiful views at Flagstaff Hill, Grays Bay Lookout, Horseshoe Bay Lookout and Mount Nutt Lookout. And indulge in the natural world more in Bowen's many parklands such as Case and Hansen Park, Grays Park and Rose Bay Park.
Bushwalkers will like the Bowen Horseshoe Bay Walking Track and the Murray Bay Walking Track. Venture further from Bowen to its nearby islands including Gloucester, Holbourne, Middle, North Head and Saddleback.
Bowen murals
The town is unique for its many murals. After a resident travelled to Chemainus, Canada, in 1988, to discover the town's history documented by murals, she influenced Bowen to do the same. Now residents and visitors can enjoy many colourful walls in the township.
